국제고려학회 아리랑 편집위원회가 엮은 『아리랑: 상실과 재생의 노래』가 출간되었습니다.

이 책은 2016년 7월 16일 개최된 국제워크숍 「아리랑」을 계기로 시작된 연구의 결실입니다. 당시 국내외 연구자들은 아리랑이 지닌 역사적·문화적 의미를 새롭게 조명하고, 변화하는 시대 속에서 아리랑 연구의 현재와 미래를 모색하기 위해 한자리에 모였습니다. 이후 오랜 기간 지속된 연구와 토론, 자료 수집과 분석을 거쳐 마침내 한 권의 연구서로 출간하게 되었습니다.

아리랑은 한국인의 삶과 정서를 담아온 대표적인 민요이자 소중한 문화유산입니다. 그러나 아리랑은 단순한 노래를 넘어 시대의 변화와 민족의 경험, 그리고 디아스포라 공동체의 기억이 축적된 살아있는 문화적 자산이기도 합니다. 본서는 이러한 문제의식 아래 아리랑의 기원과 전승, 근대적 변용, 그리고 세계 각지에서 이루어진 수용과 재창조의 과정을 다각적으로 탐구하고 있습니다.

책은 「유래와 변천」, 「근대와 아리랑」, 「아리랑 디아스포라」의 세 부분으로 구성되어 있습니다. 각 장에서는 아리랑의 역사적 형성과 전파 과정, 근대 이후의 문화적 변화, 중국 조선족 사회와 재일조선인 사회 등 해외 한인 공동체에서 나타난 다양한 실천 양상을 폭넓게 분석하고 있습니다.

『아리랑: 상실과 재생의 노래』는 아리랑을 민족문화의 상징으로만 바라보는 시각을 넘어, 변화와 재창조를 거듭하며 오늘날까지 살아 숨 쉬는 문화유산으로 이해하고자 하는 연구 성과입니다. 이 책이 아리랑 연구의 새로운 지평을 넓히고, 한국학 연구의 심화와 국제적 확산에 기여하는 계기가 되기를 기대합니다.

Publication of Arirang: A Song of Loss and Renewal

The International Society for Korean Studies (ISKS) Arirang Editorial Committee is pleased to announce the publication of Arirang: A Song of Loss and Renewal by Kyungin Publishing.

This volume is the culmination of a long-term research project that began with the international workshop “Arirang,” held on July 16, 2016. At the workshop, scholars from Korea and abroad gathered to reexamine the historical and cultural significance of Arirang and to explore new directions for Arirang studies in a rapidly changing world. Through nearly a decade of continued research, discussion, data collection, and analysis, the project has now reached fruition in the form of this scholarly volume.

Arirang is one of Korea’s most representative folk songs and an important cultural heritage. At the same time, it is far more than a song. It embodies historical experiences, collective memories, and the cultural identities of Korean communities both within and beyond the Korean Peninsula. Recognizing these dimensions, this volume examines the origins and transmission of Arirang, its transformations in the modern era, and its reception and reinterpretation in diverse communities around the world.

The book is organized into three sections: “Origins and Transformations,” “Modernity and Arirang,” and “Arirang and the Korean Diaspora.” The contributors explore a wide range of topics, including the historical formation and dissemination of Arirang, its cultural changes in modern times, and its various manifestations among overseas Korean communities, including ethnic Koreans in China and Koreans in Japan.

Arirang: A Song of Loss and Renewal represents an important scholarly effort to understand Arirang not merely as a symbol of Korean culture, but as a living cultural heritage that continues to evolve through adaptation and renewal. It is hoped that this volume will contribute to expanding the horizons of Arirang studies and further advancing Korean Studies on an international scale.
